THE STORY

In the post-apocalypse, a war rages between the last human survivors and the malformed techno-mancing Witches. Witch Hunters are skilled warriors that hunt and kill these super powered enemies. They are trained in the ways of analog combat. They have no names, their entire identities exist within their personal code. CODENAME: KANSAS is the most accomplished amongst them but she soon learns there’s more to her than just her code and arms. Transported into the far future, (the post-post-apocalypse) by a pair of time traveling red combat boots, Kansas meets Glenada, a “Good Witch” out to restore order and balance to the last human settlement. To do so, she must recover the sentient A.I. program called OZ, which has been guiding humanity through its darkest days long after Kansas’ time and is the credited architect of the last surviving civilization. Kansas is sent on a mission to recover the AI from Glenada’s enemy, the Witch of the West. But Kansas knows when she’s being used as a pawn in someone else’s power play. Keeping her sword arm flexed and her trigger finger nice and itchy, Kansas sets off to get her ticket home and along the way finds a mystery to unravel which will show that she is far more than just the history’s greatest Witch Hunter. Get ready for an immersive experience unlike any other attempted, Copious Love presents a post-apocalyptic Wizard of Oz live on stage, immersing audiences in a fragmented future using a digitally projected set, delivering an action experience to blow your f***ing mind. In a 3D world, she only needs two dimensions: Kick and Ass.

THE THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE

The future holds unexpected environments, innovations in artificial intelligence and of course the weaponry to defeat it. Copious Love Productions, in partnership with the Academy of Interactive Entertainment Seattle Campus, present a post-apocalyptic Wizard of Oz, immersing audiences in a fragmented future using a digitally projected set. A play with fight scenes, lasers, smoke, thumping music, level-ups, robots, cats, the meme that broke the internet, the meme that broke us all, and a little dog too. The world premiere of this original show arrives Halloween weekend 2015 in Seattle, Washington. “KANSAS” will be Copious Love’s ninth originally produced stage show. It represents a new era in cultivating partnerships across art mediums. With the Seattle Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE), we’ve created an internship program in which a dozen artists are creating incredible 3D scenic backgrounds, stunning visual fx, magic, and a little dog to guide us through a post-post-apocalyptic digital world. Imagine a 7-foot tall construction bot that can transform itself, 4 magic wands that wield the power of technology, dystopian Munchies half the size of humans, their favorite weapon the L.F. Bombs, a cat controlling a humanoid body, and Kansas, the greatest Witch Hunter of all time. Not only have we provided a platform for video game and film designers to collaborate in live performance, but we seek to break ground in live production design, by combining humans on stage with an array of technologies, bringing theatre into the video game realm. This goal is larger than the show. The broader impact aims to change our perception of the human/digital experience. We asked ourselves how we could create something truly new. We lit an ember and the people that showed up turned an inferno ablaze before our eyes. We hope to show the world what we have seen.

BWW Review: Copious Love’s CODENAME: KANSAS, WITCH HUNTER a Knockout

“…This is the kind of theatre I love. It is totally immersive, genre-bending, high-tech, and never takes itself too seriously. CODENAME: KANSAS, Witch Hunter had the grit of a Mad Max-esque post apocalypse, but the gratuitous violence and crass language of an Adult Swim cartoon. The dialogue was loud and rife with sexual innuendo that made me snicker like I was a preteen. At points, the plot seemed a bit jumpy, but so do most plotlines in video games. When you play video games, the plot ultimately is secondary to the visual effects and 360-roundhouse kicking your opponent in face. Behold, the next generation of The Wizard of Oz… ”

City Arts Review: Ding, Dong, the Cyborg’s Dead

“…To create the world of CODENAME: KANSAS, Copious Love partnered with the Academy of Interactive Entertainment. Students from AIE’s Seattle campus designed the sets, digitally-projected three-dimensional worlds vividly illustrating the play’s eerily familiar, nostalgically futuristic setting, full of cool retro touches mixed with ’90s-era electric futurism. The post-post-apocalypse seems concocted by a bunch of gamers about to go to their first rave in 1999. The chunky set visuals and electric green graphic interface scream a vision of the future from decades ago. Creating a punked-out vision of tomorrow from yesterday guarantees a good mood for any first-generation Playstation fans out there, with every backdrop emitting serious Tomb Raider vibes. …”
